Sherwin-Williams launches organic zinc-rich epoxy coating for blasted steel

11 October 2017

Sherwin-Williams Protective & Marine Coatings has launched Zinc Clad 4100, a new high-solids coating featuring recoat times as short as 30 minutes.

This allows for accelerated shop throughput, enhanced project schedules, and fast field project turnarounds.

Providing further efficiencies, the three-component, organic zinc-rich epoxy coating eliminates the need for sweat-in time.

In addition, its user-friendly packaging allows applicators to mix components directly in the Part A container for faster and more accurate mixing.

Designed for use over properly prepared blasted steel, the organic zinc-rich primer delivers outstanding application properties and excellent performance in the field.

For example, Zinc Clad 4100 provides cathodic protection to reduce corrosion potential in the event of the steel substrate being exposed due to coating damage.

In addition, the coating exhibits self-healing properties if it becomes damaged.

"Zinc Clad 4100 answers our customers’ need for a high-solids organic zinc-rich epoxy that enables productivity improvements across an array of shop and field applications,” said Tim McDonough, Marketing Director – Products & Services, Sherwin-Williams Protective & Marine Coatings.

"The coating’s fast recoat time allows applicators to apply subsequent coats in as little as 30 minutes.

"In addition, with no sweat-in time required, applicators can further reduce downtime in both the shop and the field.”

Zinc Clad 4100 enables expanded application opportunities for the bridge and highway and structural steel markets due to its performance characteristics.

For example, the coating meets Class B requirements for slip coefficient and creep resistance as defined by the Research Council on Structural Connections (RCSC) for use in slip-critical bolted connections in all USA states.

It also meets the performance requirements of NEPCOAT List B for use on highway bridge steel in the Northeast USA.

Zinc Clad 4100 is the newest addition to the Sherwin-Williams Protective & Marine Coatings Global Core Product offering, a set of products available at the same quality and performance standard anywhere in the world.
