Are Ultramarines and Zinc Ferrites as “cool” as the benchmark high IR reflecting pigments?

12 August 2015

Nubiola & Rebain presented the paper ‘Are Ultramarines and Zinc Ferrites as "cool” as the benchmark high IR reflecting pigments?’ at the 2015 Convention organised by the Surface Coatings Association of New Zealand from July 24-26 at the Rydeges hotel in Rotorua. The formulation of ‘cool’ coatings is based on the use of pigments with low absorbance in the Near IR, which are usually associated to Mixed Metal Oxides with high performance but also with high cost of colouration.

In this paper they compared the NIR absorbance (and TSR) of their Ultramarines and Zinc Ferrites and its correlation with the increase of temperature of the final coating surface with products accepted by the industry as cool pigments in order to review the idea of cool pigment and explore further possibilities of cost effective performance, mainly in the blue and beige colour spaces but not only.
