Colourful prospects: Ceresana publishes Report on the World Market for Paints and Varnishes

26 February 2016

Paints and varnishes are not only pretty: They protect against rust and contribute to heat insulation; additionally, they can be, for example, self-cleaning and antibacterial. According to the new study of the market research institute Ceresana, worldwide demand for paints and varnishes accounted for almost 40Mt in 2014. The report gives a prognosis up to the year 2022.

Development in Asia

Half of all paints and varnishes are consumed by the construction industry. In many countries, major projects in commercial construction and infrastructure provide for increasing revenues. Besides traditional interior and exterior house paints which are mainly used for constructions of residential units, more and more innovative products with multiple uses, such as paints with lotus effect, are increasingly processed. Market researchers at Ceresana expect demand for paints and varnishes used for industrial products to increase by 2.1%/yr. Already now, 40% of global revenues are generated in the region Asia Pacific. Ceresana expects this world region to further increase its leading position in the upcoming years.

Activity in the vehicle market

Another important application area is transportation, that is varnishing of passenger cars, trucks, buses, aircraft, rail vehicles, and ships. Analysts at Ceresana expect this segment to exhibit the highest increase and account for a demand for paints and varnishes of more than 5Mt until 2022. Thereby, series coating of road vehicles will increase most significantly by 3.2%/yr, while demand for varnishing for repairs as well as protective coating for ships will develop less dynamically.

Water and solvent based paints and varnishes still dominate the market quantitatively with shares of 55% and 37% respectively – however, they get more and more competition. Until 2022, powder coatings will presumably gain market shares. Important application areas for powder coatings are household appliances, computer casings, metal products and facade elements.

The study in brief:

Chapter 1 provides a description and analysis of the global market for paints and varnishes, including forecasts up to 2022: The development of revenues, demand volumes and production is analysed for each region of the world.
Chapter 2 offers a detailed analysis of 16 countries: Demand, export, import, production, and revenues. Additionally, demand split by applications is examined in regard to these countries. Market data on demand volume for each country is split by types of paints and varnishes, as well as technology (water-based, solvent-based, powder coatings and other products).
Chapter 3 analyses regional markets for paints and varnishes in detail: Data and influential factors on applications in construction, transportation, wood processing, industry products, as well as other applications.
Chapter 4 looks at demand for paints and varnishes – split by the types acrylics, vinyls, alkyd, epoxy, polyurethane, polyester, other polymers and other products.
Chapter 5 offers a useful directory of the 113 most important producers of paints and varnishes, clearly arranged according to contact details, revenues, profit, product range, production sites, and profile summary. These producers are for example: Altana, Asian Paints, BASF Coatings, HB Fuller, Jotun, Kansai Paint, KCC, Lonza, Masco, Nippon Paint, PPG, RPM, Sacal, Sherwin-Williams, Sika, Tikkurila, and Valspar.
