PPG has completed a Colorful Communities® project that helped revitalise the Jubilee Fields Community Centre in Shildon, UK. The project brought together more than a dozen PPG volunteers, who spent two days beautifying the entire interior of the centre with Johnstone’s Trade™ paint by PPG.
PPG provided a US$45,500 (£36,000) grant to assist with the project, including more than 75 gallons (290lit) of Johnstone’s Trade Acrylic Durable Eggshell paint, which provides an extremely tough, stain-resistant finish. Muralist Lewis Hobson from public art specialist Durham Spray Paints worked with PPG volunteers on a mural that celebrates the history of Shildon as the birthplace of railways.
The colour scheme for the centre was chosen by PPG specialists and follows colour psychology principles. Sailor Boy (twilight blue purple), a calming and welcoming colour, was used for the reception and Sailing Boat (yellow grey beige), a warm and cozy colour, for the other rooms. Feature walls colours included Caribbean Green (emerald aqua green) and Madagascar Pink (cerise pink).

“The centre is a vital part of the community in Shildon, offering a place for people of all ages and backgrounds to meet and socialise,” said Councillor Shirley Quinn, Mayor of Shildon. “Following COVID, there is a great need for interaction and people being comfortable in coming together to socialise. The centre has been used and maintained well but was in desperate need of decorating and a general facelift. With PPG’s commitment, we can achieve this to improve services to the wider community.”
The Jubilee Fields Community Centre provides a range of services and activities for the local community, such as sports, fitness, education, health and wellbeing, and social events. The centre aims to improve the quality of life and social inclusion of the residents of Shildon and the surrounding areas.
“At PPG, we believe in the power of colour to enhance the places where we live, work and play,” said James Frean, PPG Business Director, Northern Europe, Aerospace. “We are proud to partner with the Jubilee Fields Community Centre and support its mission of serving the community with a variety of programmes and opportunities. We hope that our colourful contribution will make a positive difference for the centre and its users.”
