Omya, a global producer of industrial minerals, has acquired Bublon GmbH, a technology leader in producing lightweight fillers/microspheres using closed cell expanded perlite. Bublon technology is based on the controlled thermal expansion of raw perlite using proprietary state of the art electrical furnaces. The products combine enhanced hermeticity and high mechanical strength with a low carbon footprint.

The acquisition extends Omya’s processing capability for lightweight fillers and adds patented, energy-efficient production processes as well as a unique team of experienced technical experts.

Philippe Quemener, Omya Executive Vice President Operations and Sustainability said: “We are looking forward to welcoming the Bublon team to Omya. Our combined expertise in natural minerals and the patented Bublon technology means we are becoming the best in class in microspheres’ processing.”

David González Amago, Director Global Business Development Lightweight Fillers at Omya, said: “This is great news for our customers. With the acquisition we are a step closer to offering a one-stop-shop experience for our customers with a broad portfolio of lightweight fillers. The technology complements our existing product range and fits perfectly with our commitment to providing advanced, sustainable materials and solutions.”

Bublon’s co-Managing Director, Michael Wimmer, commented: “We are delighted to become part of the Omya Group. The support of the wider Omya team will enable us to accelerate innovation and to create additional value for our customers.”

Martin Pfeffer, CEO Binder+Co added: “We are happy to have concluded the sale of Bublon to Omya today. It was important for us to find a counterparty that will ensure a long-term perspective for the Bublon team and to further develop the Bublon technology. With Omya we know we have found the right partner.”
